Ever since I was a kid my dad has loved halloween. Even on the halloweens that he would say “I’m not going to do anything this year, I just don’t have the time”, he would inevitably put something together. I remember one year, he decorated the front entrance, hooked up the intercom, and hid in the truck. Unsuspecting trick-or-treaters were caught off guard, almost too frightened to collect the candy they had come in search of, when the creepy voice from no where was suddenly heard.

Five years ago, our backyard neighbor suggested we do something together for halloween. We spent a few months coming up with cool ideas and bringing them to life in the garage and backyard. We were only “open” halloween night and had a line the entire night! People loved us and we loved watching people scream and run! Thus began Goatman Flats. Each year after, we came up with new ideas, built new props, opened for more then one night (though for many reasons, including not wanting to be banned from any future neighborhood parties, we only ran it 5-6 nights), and started to amass quite the following. Surely we had what it took to open a professional haunt, right? How hard could it really be???

And here we are 5 years later, finally opening the professional haunt, that truthfully I myself had given up on. But not my dad. This is his passion. His dream. He spent countless hours looking for buildings, meeting with people only to find it wasn’t going to work because the zoning wasn’t right, the building wasn’t up to code, the owner wasn’t interested, etc. And when all hope had seemed lost and disappointment was too well known, a friend of his called saying Provo Towne Centre was interested in meeting! Piece after piece begun to fall into place! My own hope and desire returned! We found great partners! The coding was right! The fire marshall approved! And so much more! Even with all these amazing things happening, it still felt like a maybe. And then we ordered all the wood to build 376 walls. When I drove up to my dads the day it was delieverd I just stood there, starring. Overwhelmed at the massive task ahead, I also felt that we were getting closer to this being a reality!

Last night as I was driving to the mall, my maybe became a full blown YES this REALLY is happening! There she was, on the west side of I-15! Our billboard! Big, Beautiful (in a twisted sense), and hard to miss!!! I won’t lie, amidst the joy and giddiness, I may have shed a tear or two. This dream that started years ago has now come to life! For all of us that are involved… from my dad who believed that if he built it, they would come, to me who lost faith but has since been brought back to the light, to our awesome partners, and all those in between…we know how truly blessed we are to be able to do something that we are so passionate about. And we hope our passion brings you chills year after year!

The morning began with me instantly feeling like I had forgotten something. Costumes? Check. People? Check. Directions? Check. I had everything I needed but this being our first parade, I didn’t really know what to expect. To be completely honest, when I applied for the parade, I did so fully expecting to be denied. I was absolutely thrilled when they accepted us and quickly began to put a plan into place. But just as quickly as the planning began, it was placed on the back burner. Before I knew it, the parade was days away and I realized I still had plenty to get done. My biggest concern, and really only concern, in doing the parade was having people look at us and not get what we were doing. The route was much longer (and wider) then I had anticipated and we quickly realized that our “plan” was not going to work. Fortunately, everyone in our group adjusted quickly and we went to work with what we had! I really hadn’t planned out a routine for myself and wasn’t sure I was going to be able to pull it off but as soon as I began I felt I had something that fit with what we needed and I went with it. I was so engrossed in my character that I hardly noticed how or what anyone else was doing. Upon completion I was pleased to hear everyone had done their part and we all felt good about what we had done! Despite the voids we had, I feel we represented our haunt well and gave people a small glimpse of what Anguish Asylum is like.

Our inaugural parade certainly was just the beginning!
